CHILDREN are being endangered by drug users and dealers plaguing a Keighley park, councillors have warned.

Countless used syringes and other drugs materials have been found littering Devonshire Park, including the play area.

Senior councillors are now pledging action to tackle the problem and 'reclaim' the park for the public.

Grandfather-of-two Peter Redmond was carrying out clean-up work in the park and said he was horrified when he recovered about 100 syringes within an hour.

"I was totally shocked," said Mr Redmond, 48.

"Many of the needles were around the kiddies' play area. It was disgusting.

"Using protective gloves and sharps bins I collected what I could, but there were just so many lying about."

Electrician Mr Redmond, who lives at Denholme, said he used to take his own two sons to the park when they were children.

But he added: "Over the years the place has declined, which is so sad.

"I now have two young grandsons and I certainly wouldn't want them playing there.

"It should be a place that families can enjoy, but drug dealing and use openly happens and people need to be aware of the dangers."

Councillors in the Keighley Central ward said they would be now raising the issue with Bradford Council officers and the police.

"This is a major problem and I am deeply concerned," said Councillor Zafar Ali (Con).

"It is extremely dangerous for anyone visiting the park and particularly for youngsters who play there.

"Those responsible for dumping these materials should realise they are playing with people's lives.

"Visitors come from outside the area to the park and this gives a very bad impression."

Councillor Khadim Hussain (Lab) described the situation as being "very disturbing".

"People's lives are being put in danger and it is totally unacceptable," he added.

"I will take it up with the police and the council, particularly the parks section, to see what can be done.

"We want to improve the site – and a Friends of Devonshire Park group was set-up to do precisely that.

"We need to get the community on board.

"People can be the 'eyes and ears' and I would urge them to report any suspicious activity."

Councillor Abid Hussain (Lab) said improvement efforts were being made.

"We are trying our best to prevent these problems," he said.

"We can't let drug users and dealers use the park and we're working hard on this.

"It is an extremely serious issue."

In May 2014, a nine-year-old girl had to have medical tests checks after accidentally pricking herself with a discarded needle in the park.

Police said officers do patrol the park and they appeal for anyone with information about drugs activities to come forward.

"We will look into any new intelligence about drug use and dealing in Devonshire Park," said a spokesman.

"Anyone who is aware of drugs supply or use can contact the Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101 or report information anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111."
