A ROAD in Queensbury was closed this morning after the discovery of a burned out car linked to a firearms incident.

It is thought the silver Vauxhall Astra had been deliberately set on fire. It was discovered in Deanstones Lane, close to Queensbury School, last night.

It is understood the same vehicle had earlier been driven away from the scene of a shooting incident, in Parkinson Lane, Halifax, in which shots were fired at a house, causing damage to a window.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Swift, of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said extensive inquiries were being conducted to establish the motive for the shooting and identify those responsible.

He said: "Any discharge of a firearm is a serious matter.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who has either witnessed the events in Parkinson Lane, or who saw a silver Vauxhall Astra in the vicinity of this offence, or in Queensbury, where a car was found burned out shortly before 10.15pm."

Firefighters were called to Deanstones Lane at about 10.15pm. A fire service spokesman said the blaze was started deliberately and police were investigating.

Firefighters said they believed the road was closed because of ice formed from water used to douse the flames.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said no-one was in the car at the time of the fire, and added that officers were still at the scene carrying out inquiries.
