TWO historic wool firms have woven a new business link through a deal giving a Bradford-based international merchant a controlling stake in a famous carpet maker.

H. Dawson Wool has acquired a controlling equity stake in Axminster Carpets based in Axminster, South Devon.

Dawson was established in 1888 and Axminster Carpets traces its roots back to 1755.

The carpet manufacturer, which has operated from its site Axminster site since 1937, was rescued by a group of local businessmen, saving 100 jobs, after calling in administrators in 2013.

Dawson, which has supplied UK and overseas wool carpet manufacturers for many years, said its investment in Axminster Carpets demonstrates its commitment to the sector.

Jo Dawson, chairman, said the deal was an essential part of its strategy to develop alliances throughout the supply chains in which it operates, for the benefit of all parties. .

He said: “The passion and expertise within H. Dawson Wool complements the strengths of Axminster Carpets. We will encourage increased market and consumer awareness about the many benefits arising from the use of wool-rich carpets in a wide variety of environments and applications.

"The benefits of owning an Axminster carpet go way beyond the stunning design and beautiful craftsmanship within each product. Amongst their many inherent benefits, these incredible carpets are designed to have a natural ability to absorb dangerous VOC gases, actively manage a healthier climate in your room whilst acting as a flame retardant barrier to your floor.”

Royal Warrant holder Axminster Carpets, founded by Thomas Whitty in 1755, has produced for royal residences, some of world's top hotels, train carriages and the aircraft of global airlines as well as thousands of homes throughout the UK and worldwide.

The business has gone through significant change during the last three years to improve customer service and new product development.

Jo Dawson, who has become Axminster Carpets chairman, said the provision of additional support from H. Dawson Wool, increased financial resource and the further strengthening of the Axminster Carpets senior management team would take the company on the next phase of its journey.

Steve Winslet, Axminster Carpets chief executive, added: “Our business sells wonderful high-quality carpets that are predominantly made from wool. It makes real sense that our new owners are experts in the sourcing of our primary raw material. Their wool expertise, global reach and long-term commitment to the industry will add real value to our company. We are excited about the future growth aspirations for the business.”

H. Dawson Wool supplies wool from more than 40 countries to a wide range of customers in 75 locations worldwide.
