RATS feeding on mounds of food waste in daylight behind a Bingley takeaway have sparked calls for urgent action.

Disgusted residents in Busfeild Street, behind Main Street, say they have endured two months of stench and vermin due to an unemptied trade bin and piles of torn-open rubbish sacks behind Amano's pizza and fast food outlet.

Businessmen Robert Hind-Smith lives in a penthouse apartment doors away from the stinking eyesore and also lets two flats in the terrace building beneath his home.

"I was called this morning by one of my tenants to say they'd seen rats at the bins - big full size rats that come across from the railway track to feed on the rubbish day and night," he said yesterday.

"It's just been a nightmare for two months.

"I've repeatedly been to Amano's to ask them to sort it out, but it's different people working there all the time and you can't find out who the boss is.

"They said last week a skip was coming to clear it all, but I don't believe it."

Mr Hind-Smith has lived in Busfeild Street for 30 years and said this was the worst rubbish problem he had witnessed.

"I have spoken to Philip Davies MP and he is going to take it up with Bradford Council and I have also spoken to their environmental health department myself but it was only yesterday I was told a case officer had been assigned to the problem.

"The thing is there's no deterrent. If they issued an enforcement order and closed the place down straight away - then the rubbish go just like that.

Shipley MP Mr Davies said: "I have taken up these concerns with Bradford Council and I hope it will act swiftly. Nobody should have to live next door to issues like this and anyone else in my constituency with similar problems should contact me."

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "We have received a complaint about this and the matter is being investigated by our Environmental Health officers."

A spokesman for Biffa waste services, which owns the overflowing trade bin, said Amano's was no longer one of its customers and staff would be calling on Thursday to collect the bin and end any involvement.

No-one at Amano's was available to comment.

Its website says it "incorporates traditional favourites with original dishes that deliver mouthwatering food straight to your door.

"Our food is made fresh everyday. It is our commitment at Amano's to provide excellent food, service and an experience for you and your family to enjoy for many years to come," it continues.
