A FORMER Keighley mayor whose daughter's organs helped save other people's lives has donated £2,000 to NHS Blood and Transplant.

Several seriously-ill patients received organs following the death, at the hands of a drunk driver, of 32-year-old Claire McKeown five years ago.

Now mum Sally Walker, who raised cash for the transplant cause during her mayoral term, has handed over a cheque.

She and her husband Martin attended a ceremony in Liverpool, where Claire worked and a creative space is dedicated to her memory.

"All of us are donors but you don't really expect to ever have to think about it," said Mrs Walker, who was mayor in 2013-14.

"When Claire died, her husband and all the family knew that that was what she would have wanted."

Mr Walker said organ donation was a cause close to their daughter's heart in every sense.

"We couldn't be prouder of Claire for her achievements in life and in death," he said.

"At her funeral I quoted a line from the film Blade Runner that stated 'the star that burns twice as bright lasts half as long' and Claire shone so very, very brightly, both personally and professionally."

NHS Blood and Transplant thanked the couple for the donation.

"It's a wonderful gesture from Claire's parents to dedicate their fundraising efforts to our trust fund," said a spokesman.

"Across the UK there is a shortage of organ donors and in order to save more lives it is vital more people talk about organ donation and commit to being a donor."
