A FED-up and concerned resident filmed 12 motorists in a half-hour period running red lights at a "lethal" junction in Bradford.

Parents with their children in the car, workmen, private hire drivers and a bus driver were captured on camera in two 15-minute slots.

The footage was filmed at the crossroads junction of Barkerend Road, Gilpin Street and Byron Street, in Barkerend, between 8.30am and 8.45am last Wednesday and Thursday.

Eight drivers were spotted on the first day and four on the second.

The man who filmed the motorists said similar incidents had blighted the junction for years and said he had narrowly avoided being hit by a female driver who had "jumped the Gilpin Street lights in an aggravated fashion".

He backed the Telegraph & Argus Stop The Danger Drivers campaign and urged police to clampdown on dangerous motorists using the traffic lights where he filmed his footage.

The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, pointed at that there are at least four primary schools in close proximity to the junction, as well as a children's centre and nursery, and that the crossings were used daily by hundreds of young children.

"It is lethal, absolutely lethal," he said.

"We see an awful lot of dangerous driving in Barkerend - it is a daily occurrence. And there are hundreds of parents and children crossing the road there.

"Police are monitoring their hotspots, but I don't know if this is one of them. We don't see much police activity - maybe this should be one of their hotspots. It is not obvious that they do any enforcement here.

"It would only take a few people to get done to make people get the message - but you do not see the police."

MORE STOP THE DANGER DRIVERS STORIES

The video clips show vehicles driving through red lights in both directions on Barkerend Road, as well as joining the road from Gilpin Street and Byron Street. There are people crossing the road at the same time in some of the clips.

"It is a nightmare," said the man. "It is very busy road. It takes a huge amount of traffic and a huge amount of pedestrians, particularly with the schools. There are always people walking around."

The man's wife said: "A friend of mine had her sister-in-law hit by two vehicles just before Christmas, just by the crossroads. She had head injuries and her limbs were badly injured."

The junction is only yards from where Saliq Malik died in a car crash, on Gilpin Street, in September 2014. The 15-year-old, of Eccleshill, was a passenger in a Volkswagen Golf that ploughed into a wall, parked car and a lamp-post on Gilpin Street.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "We are aware of this information that has been passed to us by a member of the public and are making the necessary inquiries."
