A mother and son are raising money for a gruelling charity trek in Africa, despite a medical setback.

Michael Palframan, 15, of Ilkley, recently had to have his appendix removed, but is already back in training for the walk through Kenya and Tanzania with his mother, Karen, in October.

The ActionAid Footsteps of the Maasai' challenge will see them visit the charity's projects in Narok, Kenya, before camping and trekking more than 50 miles through hot, dusty grasslands and volcanic landscape of the Rify valley in Tanzania.

They will be accompanied by Maasi tribespeople and hope to learn more about their culture.

Mrs Palframan and Michael need to raise £3,000 each to take part in the challenge, which will go towards ActionAid's work against poverty and injustice.

Anyone who would like to sponsor the Palframans can contact them on (01943) 607334, or visit (www.justgiving.com/karenandmichaelmaasai07). Tickets for the ceilidh are available by calling the same number.
