YORKSHIRE Water is warning homeowners in Bradford about the potential costs of burst water pipes as temperatures drop below freezing.
The average cost to repair a pipe in the home is between £6,500 and £7,500, and so Yorkshire Water has teamed up with the Association of British Insurers to offer simple advice on how to avoid a potential disaster.
Tips include insulating water pipes, spotting which pipes may be exposed to freezing temperatures, keeping the central heating on at a low temperature and knowing how to use the stop tap properly.
David Stevenson, head of water distribution at Bradford-based Yorkshire Water, said: "Freezing weather makes household pipes really vulnerable to cracks and bursts, and not only are these expensive to resolve but also incredibly upsetting, causing significant damage to people's homes.
"That is why we really want to get the message out there about the simple steps people can take to protect themselves over the winter and what to do if the worst case scenario does happen."
