A man in his 60s was taken to hospital after being overcome by a fire in the bedroom of his bungalow in Baildon.
Firefighters from Shipley and Bingley attended the incident in Knoll Park Drive just after 8.40pm last night, after being alerted by the Safe and Sound automated smoke alarm system.
When crews arrived, they found the man outside the property after his efforts to control the fire himself had failed.
He was transferred to hospital by ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation.
A spokesman for the Shipley crew said: "It was a substantial fire.
"There was a great deal of heat damage to the bedroom, and smoke damage to the rest of the property.
"The man was alerted by his smoke alarms, which just shows how important they are."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
