A man has been locked up for a drunken New Year's Eve attack on his former girlfriend.
Michael Stenhouse, 20, tried to wrestle Kirsty Nicholson out of a taxi before he was stopped by her stepfather, Dean Mitchell.
But Bradford Crown Court was told that a short time later Stenhouse turned up at their house and tried to break down an interior door using a pickaxe handle.
A police officer was already in the house and he, along with Mr Mitchell, managed to keep Stenhouse at bay as he continued to smash at the door.
After hearing Stenhouse, of Peel Park Terrace, Bradford, has a previous conviction for violence Judge Terry Walsh said he was satisfied he remained a danger to the public and imposed an extended sentence.
Passing sentence, he said: "Two hours after the original assault you went round to the house armed with a pickaxe handle and it must have been an absolutely terrifying incident to be on the receiving end and to be behind that door.
"You had simply lost all reason at that time."
The court was told that the couple had been out celebrating New Year's Eve when Miss Nicholson telephoned her stepparents.
Mr Mitchell could hear that she was crying so went out to find her and arrived at the scene to see Stenhouse trying to pull her out of a taxi by her legs.
He managed to get her to safety but Stenhouse then turned up at the house.
At an earlier hearing, Stenhouse pleaded guilty to affray, assault and possession of an offensive weapon.
He was sent to a young offender institution for 18 months and told that he will have to serve an extended licence period of 12 months.
