A ROOKIE Keighley soldier has won a best-recruit award.
Private Duncan Aitchison (pictured) received the Parachute Regiment accolade after completing his combat infantryman’s course at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick.
"During the selection process for the Army I got myself so fit I thought I may as well go for the paras – the elite in my opinion," said Pte Aitchison, 25.
"The course at Catterick has its good and bad bits – mostly good I think and you can laugh off the bad bits at the end of the day.
"My dad was chuffed when I told him I was joining the Paras and he'll be well pleased about the award.
"The award is great, I'm pleased with it myself, but I'm just glad I got through the course."
His platoon commander, Captain Dan Morgan-Wood, paid tribute.
"As well as being the 'granddad' of the platoon Pte Aitchison performed to a high standard throughout what is a tough six-months course," he said.
"He never switched off and was recognised as someone who gave a lot of support to his fellow recruits."
After taking some leave, Pte Aitchison will join his new unit – the 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment – garrisoned in Colchester, Essex.
