Detectives were today questioning two men after a 79-year-old woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Bradford city centre.
The driver of a blue Vauxhall Astra failed to stop after it ploughed into the woman, who was from Idle, in Drewton Road, between Westgate and Manningham Lane, at 2.40pm yesterday.
The vehicle, which suffered extensive damage to the windscreen and front end, was found in Manningham last night. It was undergoing forensic examinations today.
Two men, aged 23 and 19, have been arrested and were being held in police custody.
Officers examined footage from Bradford's "ring of steel" CCTV system in a bid to track the vehicle.
The usually busy road between Westgate and Manningham Lane was cordoned off for several hours following the incident.
While officers redirected traffic, an ambulance, several police cars and a blue Ford car could be seen within the cordons.
People from nearby businesses and passers-by crowded at the police barriers and also watched from a nearby supermarket car park.
The police spokesman confirmed a woman had died at the scene and appealed for anyone who saw the Vauxhall being driven off to contact the force.
Police were not naming the dead woman until relatives had been informed.
The Bradford Coroner has been informed and an inquest will be held at a date to be arranged. Anyone who has information about the incident or the vehicle beforehand should contact Bradford South Road Policing Team on (01274) 376259.
