The end of daily traffic jams is in sight for Addingham drivers heading into Ilkley as the date has been set for road improvements.
Bradford Council is set to start work on a right-turn lane on the busy A65 early in June to free up the bottleneck at the junction of Skipton Road and Victoria Avenue.
The junction has been causing problems for eastbound drivers heading into Ilkley since traffic lights went up as part of the wide-ranging traffic management scheme to cut down on congestion and fumes in Ilkley itself.
But much like the traffic lights at the opposite end of town on the A65, the Victoria Avenue lights have been unpopular with people heading through or into Ilkley during the peak morning rush hour.
The situation at the Addingham end of the town was made worse by eastbound traffic waiting to turn right onto Victoria Avenue, further holding up drivers coming in from the west. Cars cannot pass the vehicles waiting to turn right.
Traffic has often backed up along Skipton Road as far as the Addingham bypass, and led to many drivers taking a shortcut along the old Ilkley Road through Sandbeds in an attempt to beat the jams.
Bradford highways officers are now going to create a small right-turn lane and widen the carriageway slightly, which will enable cars going straight ahead to pass those waiting to turn onto Victoria Avenue.
