With the warmer weather often leading to thoughts of cool water, West Yorkshire Police is appealing for people to stay away from the district's waterways.
The police are warning people that the region's lakes, rivers, quarries, reservoirs and canals can be very dangerous.
David Wright, manager of the force's underwater search unit said: "What people don't always consider is that these waterways aren't like swimming pools. They can be very dangerous places, even killers.
"On the surface, it might look inviting, but currents lurking beneath can be very strong, especially on canals where water is often drawn through locks and rivers which can be very unpredictable."
He said people were also unaware of cool temperatures and deceptive depths.
"The best thing to do is stay on dry land," he added.
