A Bradford MP has hit out at health bosses for delaying plans for a children's hospital in West Yorkshire.

The bill for the Leeds-based hospital has soared three-fold from when it was given the go-ahead in 2004 from, £3230m to £650m.

Plans for the children's and maternity hospital were to be shelved but health bosses backtracked and said no decision had been made.

Bradford North MP Terry Rooney has called on the Government to do "everything in its power" to get the project back on track after failings from health chiefs.

He said: "The problem here is the bill has trebled in two years. It has got the support from the Prime Minister down.

"At the moment provision is dotted around but this hospital would provide specialities in one unit, including premature births and children that needed heart or other serious operations."

Mr Rooney is one of 15 MPs to have signed a Commons motion condemning the decision by Leeds Acute Hospital NHS Trust for postponing submission of a detailed bid for the hospital without any consultation.

Earlier this week Health Minister Andy Burnham insisted that the proposals would be back on track.
