A man and woman were trapped in a flat after a fire was started at the front door.
The blaze, which firefighters believe was started deliberately, began at the foot of the stairs leading to the maisonette flat in Weller Close, off Boynton Street, in West Bowling, Bradford.
The man and woman, both thought to be in their 20s, were alerted to the fire, which started at about 11pm yesterday, by smoke detectors.
They raised the alarm after realising they could not escape the building. A neighbour also called the emergency services.
Paramedics, police and firefighters attended and the couple were rescued and treated for smoke inhalation. They refused hospital treatment.
There was some smoke damage to the stairs leading to the flat and the front door of the building was badly damaged.
Odsal Fire Station watch manager Simon Moore said: "We are treating it as deliberate, the fire investigation are looking into it."
