A dangerous carjacker who led police on a 100mph chase in a car he stole at knife-point has been jailed indefinitely.

Bradford Crown Court was told Ifraz Hussain, 24, pulled a knife on two drivers - one a lone female.

He first struck in September at traffic lights at the junction of Allerton Road and Cemetery Road. Hussain got into a Volkswagen Passat with a 12-inch hunting knife. He told the 42-year-old driver: Do as you're told and you won't get hurt.' After ordering the man out, Hussain drove away but police saw him later on Manchester Road and a chase began.

Prosecutor Joanne Butler-Savage said Hussain drove onto a grass verge on Little Horton Lane and on the wrong side of the road at 60mph. In Horton Park Avenue he ran through a red light at 100mph.

He lost control on a right-hand bend and crashed into an oncoming car.

In November, Hussain got into a woman's Renault car on Leeds Road wielding a six-inch knife. He told her: I'm going to take your car, love.' The woman replied: No you're not,' took her keys and got out of the car. Hussain ran off and when police caught him a short time later they found the knife in his shoe.

At an earlier hearing Hussain, of Fairbank Grove, Girlington, pleaded guilty robbery, attempted robbery and dangerous driving.

His barrister Stephen Wood said the offences were out of character for a man with no previous convictions. But he accepted that, because of his drinking, Hussain remains a threat to the public.

Recorder Helen Proops sentenced Hussain to jail for public protection and said he would not be released until a parole board was satisfied he was no longer a danger. He will be eligible to apply for parole after 21 months.

Hussain was banned from driving for two years and must take an extended test.
