Any dream won't do for talented pupils across the district.

Youngsters in five Bradford primary school choirs are desperate to hit the right note and land a place on a TV show which is wowing Saturday-night audiences.

Musical impresario Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and the BBC have begun a search for a performer capable of playing the title role in a West End production of Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Any Dream Will Do has seen amateur performers battle for the coveted slot during weekly sing-offs.

Now, halfway through the series, a national search has started to find a school choir to star on the show's finale.

Sandy Lane; St Walburga's RC, Shipley; Clayton CE, and St Joseph's in Bingley have thrown their hats into the ring by recording their own versions of some of the musical's numbers.

All four performances can be seen on the TV show's website as part of the competition.

The schools' choirmasters, staff and pupils are now calling on people in Bradford to get behind them. More than 500 primary schools have entered the competition.

Lynette Clapham, class teacher and music co-ordinator at Sandy Lane School, said: "We have uploaded our 60-second clip and now want people to log on and vote.

"The top 20 will go through to a second round from which Andrew Lloyd Webber will pick the winner.

"Although we have 35 pupils in our choir each entry must only have 20 youngsters singing so unfortunately there have been a few tears from those who could not take part. "I am gob-smacked by the finished recording - now we just need people to vote for us."

Mike Joyce, head teacher at Clayton C of E Primary School, said: "Our choir is of a very high standard and has won a number of competitions as well as performed in Bradford Cathedral and on Songs Of Praise.

"With help from choirmaster Judy Coles and musical director Paul Iredale we have sung very well. We need people to vote for us. It would be lovely for one of the Bradford entrants to get through."

Mary McAndrew, head teacher at St Joseph's, said pupils had "thoroughly enjoyed" recording their clip and were excited about taking part.

"We really hope we win through," she added.

Liz Fearnley, musical director and class teacher at St Walburga's, said she was "optimistic" about her school's chances.

"The choir is very talented, dedicated and committed. The children came to me and asked if we could take part. They could not wait to be filmed!"

A group of 20 pupils from Oxenhope Primary School's choir are also entered into the competition.

Some of the pupils sang a medley of songs from the musical on a BBC Radio Leeds show last week.

Sara Packham, an Oxenhope parent who is helping the choir's competition bid, said: "The children are really enthusiastic - they'd love to have a chance to perform in London."

You have until Monday to vote at www.josephchoirsearch.co.uk.

The top 20 choirs will be announced on Tuesday, May 22.
