A former footwear worker who believes hard work and exercise is the key to a long and healthy life, turned 100 yesterday.

Mabel Mudd, originally from Hornsea, East Yorkshire, has lived in the Bradford district since the Second World War.

The daughter of a surgical footwear maker, Mabel has lived at the Cedars Residential Home, on Threshfield, Baildon, for about five years.

She said: "If you want to make it to 100, you've got to make your mind up that you are going to do it.

"I've been really looking forward to the event - there has been so much preparation and so much hard work gone into it."

The Lord Mayor, Choudhary Rangzeb, and wife Zahida attended a party, along with Mabel's family and friends, including her two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Nada Green, of the residential home, said Mabel was most excited to receive a letter from the Queen.

She said: "She has been over the moon. Although she has struggled with her eye sight, she really is on the ball and can talk for hours."
