There is monkey business going on at a Heckmondwike visitor centre, as two brown lemurs have been added to its attractions.

To mark its 10th anniversary on Sunday, Ponderosa Therapeutic Centre wanted to wow its visitors with some extra-special animals.

This has led to the introduction of Mork and Mindy, who originate from Madagascar and the Comoro Islands.

Nine-year-old Mork and five-year-old Mindy are in good company as the centre, off Smithies Lane, already houses seven Marmoset monkeys.

And so taken are the staff with the new members, they are already planning to introduce ring-tailed Lemurs to the centre.

These are also found in forests and the bush of Madagascar, where they live in groups of five to 30.

They should fit in well at the centre as they are sociable creatures and enjoy eating and grooming together and females even look after each other's young.

The new monkeys will not be handled by visitors, although many of the animals are.

Office manager Lisa Bownes said: "We are very much geared towards disabled people and those with learning difficulties, who enjoy handling the animals - we're a hands-on farm. We get animals from various private breeders, and the Lemurs came from a breeder in the UK."

Contrary to popular belief, Lisa said the monkeys are not allowed too many bananas due to their high fat content.

Visitors will be able to view the new attractions at a fun day being held at the centre on Sunday to mark its 10th anniversary.

Events will include a fairground, inflatables, stalls and refreshments from 10am to 4pm.

Admission costs £3, and is free for children under the age of two.
