A shopkeeper has bravely tackled a gunman who was trying to rob his shop.

The shop owner was with his wife in the Costcutter store in Woodhall Terrace, Thornbury, Bradford, when he was confronted by a youth armed with what was believed to be a handgun at 12.45pm yesterday.

Inspector Howard Buckley, of Bradford North police, said: "One male entered the store, pointed a gun at the owner of the shop who activated a panic alarm.

"The suspect then ran out of the shop pursued by the proprietor.

"The owner collared him a short distance away and dragged him back to the shop."

Neither the shop owner, who is believed to be in his 30s, nor his wife were hurt.

The handgun had yet to be recovered yesterday afternoon.

Inspector Buckley said: "Considering the potential danger of being faced with a firearm it was a very courageous thing to do.

"We would probably not advocate that for everybody but he obviously risk assessed and decided he could have a go and bring the lad back."

A youth has been arrested in connection with the incident and was being quizzed by police last night.

Anyone with information about the robbery should call Bradford North police on (01274) 376259.
