Visitors to this year's O2 Wireless Festival at Harewood House in Leeds will be going green with the introduction of a host of environmentally-friendly initiatives.

These include shared lift schemes and a shuttle bus to help people travel to and from the live, outdoor festival, which is now in its third year.

This will enable organisers of the event, which runs from June 14 to 17, to reduce the number of car parking spaces. Charges for parking are also planned to encourage people to travel by public transport.

Bikes will be available for staff on the site, where all lighting will be energy-efficient. Across the site, an energy-efficiency programme will be implemented, encouraging workers to turn off equipment when it is not in use.

At the end of the event all unwanted tents and camping equipment will be collected and donated to local Scout groups and Tents for Africa.

A deposit will be charged on beer cups which will be refunded on return and then recycled - also helping to reduce the amount of litter left on the site.

A spokesman for the concert promoter, Los Angeles-based Live Nation - the world's largest live music company - said: "We recognise the effects of such an event on global environmental problems such climate change and have been able to implement sustainable initiatives into this year's O2 Wireless Festival Leeds."

Shuttle buses will collect people from Leeds Railway Station and drop them off at the festival, and take them back again.

Visitors to the event can expect five days of sensational live music. Last year's festival was headlined by The Who and this year Menston band the Kaiser Chiefs are topping the bill. The line-up also includes The Bees, Detroit Cobras and The Sound, the Klaxons and New-York-based producer/DJ Mark Ronson, who will get crowds dancing with a diverse selection of songs.

Also on the bill, will be indie-rockers Mumm-Ra, Los Campesinos, You Say Party We Say Die and Under the Influence of Giants.

Menston's finest, the Kaiser Chiefs, will have the home crowd up and on their feet. Nick Hodgson, from the band, said: "When we heard that Wireless was going to be in Leeds as well as London's Hyde Park, we were well up for it, and they're letting us pick the bill for the day we are headlining. It's going to be massive, our biggest headline show to date. We're going to saving up for the lasers now."

Supporting them are Birmingham boys the Editors, Wakefield siblings The Cribs, The Rakes and The Twang.

And when festival-goers reach the point of collapse from dancing, they can put their feet up in the O2 blueroom and enjoy a drink, while receiving an array of healing treatments including reiki, kinesiology, reflexology and head massage.

Green plans for 2008 are already in place, including extensive use of renewable energy, intensive energy efficiency programmes, composting of all food waste, increased use of recycled materials and improved, alternative transport solutions.
