Bradford schoolchildren are growing their own thanks to Brunel Housing Day services.

Employees from the company met youngsters from Thornton Grammar School at the Bull Royd allotments to help plot out their school garden.

As well as growing their own vegetables, plants and trees, pupils will be working towards a GNVQ qualification in Horticulture. The Brunel Day Services Gardening Team, which is part of Brunel Housing Association, is based at Bull Royd allotments and has designated an area of land for the school to develop.

Brunel Day Service staff and users, who are all adults with learning disabilities, will work with teachers and pupils to prepare the land for growing vegetables which will then be used to produce school dinners.

Thornton Grammar School spokesman Jeanette Dent said: "I have always enjoyed gardening and had toyed with the idea of having a school allotment for quite some time. I visited the allotments at Bull Royd and thought they looked great so I approached the Brunel gardening team for some helpful advice and they suggested developing this partnership.

"I think it will be great for the kids to be able to grow their own food and learn a new skill at the same time."
