Bradford Council has spent £2.5 million expanding an inner-city primary school where pupil numbers have quadrupled in as many years.

The new building at Lister Primary School in Scotchman Road, Heaton, has an extra eight classrooms, a new hall, offices, staff room, library, main entrance, nursery and an ICT room.

Internal adaptations have also been carried out to improve classroom, toilet, storage and staff administration space and to add a new hygiene room.

External landscaping work has taken place which included seeding and shrub-planting, and a new car park has also been created.

The school opened in 2003 with a total roll of 100 pupils in reception and years one and two. From September there will be 410 pupils.

The school will officially mark the opening of its new building during its annual celebration week from July 2 to 6 when various activities will be organised.

Head teacher Moira Hunt said the new building had raised its profile within the community.

"The new facilities enable us to provide an excellent learning environment with a wide range of learning experiences for our pupils and their families.

She said: "The building programme supports the school as we continue to develop and establish as a positive and forward-looking learning community."

Councillor Dale Smith, the school's chairman of governors, who is also the Council's deputy leader, said: "I think it is fair to say the word extension is a bit of a misnoma - it is a significant new building."

Coun Smith said the school had started out as two classes in the burned-out shell of Scotchman Road Middle School.

He added: "It has been a very exciting and successful project and we look forward to it being a beacon of education.

"The sports hall which has been built will be for everybody in the area. The school has a very open-door policy and this new building will benefit whole community," he said Councillor Colin Gill, the Council's executive member for children's services, said: "The Council is committed to ensuring that every child has the best possible learning environment that we can provide.

"The exciting project at Lister Primary shows that across the district we are investing to improve facilities for both our primary and secondary level pupils."
