PLANS to create Bradford's smallest pub catering for only 20 customers at a time have been given the green light.

The as yet unnamed micropub is set to be opened in Leeds Road, Thackley, in December, after it was granted planning permission by Bradford Council.

The pub will feature a selection of real ales but there will be no televisions, gaming machines or pool tables. The proposed opening hours are noon to 10pm daily.

Colin Townend, the husband of applicant Christine Townend, owns the building.

Mr Townend, 58, a semi-retired builder, will be co-owner of the micropub with his wife and is scheduled to begin building work on the site on November 2.

He said: "It feels great to get planning permission.

"I'm starting work on it on November 2. I'm hoping to open, although it's not set in stone, in December.

"We have had a lot of support from the public. Micropubs are quite popular.

"People have said they are glad I have been given planning permission.

"Hopefully it will take off. I'm now just working out what people want.

"It will hold about 20 people at a time before it would get uncomfortable.

"People like the idea of having a drink somewhere that is like someone's front room."

The application received 26 letters of support and one objection, which was concerned that no on-street parking would see an increase in traffic in the surrounding areas.

But this concern was dismissed by Council planning officers when granted planning permission.

Their report states: "The proposal has attracted a lot of public support with 26 letters being received and it is evident that these small drinking establishments are very popular and would be welcomed by the majority of the local community who feel that it would be an asset to the local area and economy.

"There has been one objection from a local resident who is concerned that the proposal will result in increased on-street parking and noise and disturbance.

"Given the character of the area which includes a pub within a short distance and the main road, it is not considered that this small scale venture will result in a material increase in noise and disturbance."

The pub will replace a florists called Rose and has a Matisse Hair Studio next door and a flat above.

A micropub is a one-room pub. The concept is attributed to publican Martyn Hillier and his pub, The Butchers Arms, in Herne, Kent, which opened in 2005.
