An alert neighbour saved a house from further fire damage by switching off the gas supply to a burning cooker.

The neighbour sprung into action after seeing smoke billowing from the kitchen of a house in Mayfield Avenue, Bailiff Bridge, Brighouse, at 12.40pm yesterday.

"The neighbour switched the gas off from outside, which switched the cooker off. It was quick thinking," said a fire service spokesman.

The occupier of the house had gone out, leaving the cooker on and a plastic tray nearby, which caught fire.

Odsla firefighters arrived in time to save the family's dog and stop the fire spreading from the kitchen, which sustained fire and smoke damage. No-one was injured.
