Possibly because of the brief reappearance of Emily – albeit in an answerphone message, wondering if she and Ross made a mistake splitting up – this is a real downer of an episode. The other strand of the story, which involves Joey and a sandwich on a ride-along with Gary – is equally uninspiring.

But although all this Mike stuff is classic, Ross is uncomfortably creepy in this episode and Monica’s decision to stay in New York rather than move to Tulsa with Chandler reveals some heart-breaking priorities.

Chandler and Joey go to a basketball game with Richard and, in a bid to be more like him, Joey tries out a cigar and Chandler grows a moustache. Rachel and Ross say they love each other for the first time.

Baby and bird still ablaze are locked in a death grip, swirling around in the whirlpool that fills the apartment.

21. The One With All the Resolutions (5.11)

The gang make New Year’s resolutions, leading to Ross going on a date with a woman named Elizabeth Hornswoggle wearing leather pants, with pasty consequences. Rachel finds out about Chandler and Monica but can’t gossip about it. The whole thing is cleverly put together, but mostly it’s about the leather pants.

20. The One With All The Thanksgivings (5.8)

A classic episode in which we flash back to Thanksgivings past, including the one where Chandler called Monica fat and the one where she responded by accidentally chopping off his toe. But it ends up with Chandler telling Monica he loves her when she has a turkey on her head, so that’s nice.

19. The One With Ross’ Tan (10.3)

Phoebe and Monica’s old room-mate Amanda is back in town and, after trying their best to avoid her, they end up at Central Perk where she reveals a few secrets from the past about Phoebe and Monica’s friendship.

Meanwhile Monica and Chandler visit one of Phoebe’s friends for adoption advice – and Chandler’s mouth gets him into trouble.

Meanwhile, the evening is punctuated by Joey insisting he can play a 19-year-old, at 31, and Phoebe’s insistence she will play music on Monica and Chandler’s big day.

Elizabeth and Ross, plus Rachel and Paul, all end up at Paul’s country home. It’s not awkward at all. Ross effectively ends Paul’s problem with him by declaring that he too, is a “neat guy”. Chandler pretends to freak out when he finds out Monica has reserved somewhere to get married.

Plus we love how the break-up plays out for the others; trapped in Monica’s bedroom with only a tub of Waxine (organic hair remover).
