A COUSIN of a man sentenced to serve at least 32 years behind bars over the acid attack murder of Barry Selby has appeared in court, charged with threatening a woman with a shotgun during an ongoing feud on a Bradford housing estate.

John Lowther, 26, was accused of possessing a shotgun and a separate charge of affray, when he appeared before Bradford and Keighley magistrates.

Lowther, of Denbury Mount, Holme Wood, Bradford, is accused of affray at an address in Stirling Crescent, Holme Wood, on Friday, June 12, this year, and a further charge of possessing a firearm, a shotgun, with intent to cause Karen Calvert to believe unlawful violence would be used against her, at the same time and place.

Prosecutor Paul Ramsay told the court yesterday the shotgun offence was an indictable only matter and would have to be heard at Bradford Crown Court.

He said the the offence of affray, which relates to damage being caused to the house in Stirling Crescent, was connected and should also be sent to the crown court.

Mr Ramsay said there was an ongoing feud between families on the Holme Wood estate and tensions were high in the community.

He asked the court to remand Lowther into custody.

Applying for bail for Lowther, who has short fair hair, is clean shaven and was wearing grey jogging bottoms and a grey hooded top, his solicitor, Saf Salam, said his client had a one-year-old child and was a carer for his nephew.

Lowther was flanked by two security officers during the 45-minute hearing, watched by members of his family in the public gallery. He spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

Chairman of the Bench, Dr Richard Jackson, told Lowther: "We feel we can provide you with conditional bail."

Lowther will have to live at a specified address; be subject to an electronically monitored curfew between 7pm and 7am; is banned from entering the Holme Wood estate; and is not allowed to contact, directly or indirectly, any witnesses in the case.

Mr Ramsay immediately announced that he was instructed to appeal against the bail decision, which would be heard before a crown court judge within two days.

Dr Jackson told the defendant he would remain in custody pending the appeal.

* Lowther is the cousin of Joseph Lowther, one of four men convicted of the murder of Barry Selby, a 50-year-old man who had sulphuric acid poured over him by intruders at his home in Rayleigh Street, East Bowling, in October 2013.
