A HUNGRY cat started a fire when it accidentally turned on an electric hob as it tried to get at some food at a house in Bradford.

Fire crews from Idle station were called to Delverne Grove, Undercliffe, at 3.15am today after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm. A fire service spokesman said the homeowners were away for a couple of days.

He added: "An open packet of cat food was on an electric hob. It appears the cat jumped up onto the work surface and turned on the touch-sensitive controls. It was an unavoidable accident, really."

The spokesman said it was a smouldering fire on the hob, and that there was extensive smoke damage throughout the house.
