SPORTS pictures by an Oxenhope photographer have gone on display at Bradford Industrial Museum.

The Eccleshill museum showcased John Ashton’s rugby union photography as he celebrated one of his pictures winning a regional competition.

Mr Ashton regularly photographs rugby matches, athletics competitions, Manorlands fundraising walks, and live music gigs.

His new exhibition, Rugby Union Yorkshire, is backed by the Yorkshire RFU and will run for a month.

Mr Ashton, a freelance photo archive assistant at the museum, recently won £50 of vouchers from the Wilkinson camera shop chain.

He submitted a picture (pictured) of a player named James Flanagan in a Yorkshire and Lancashire under-15s rugby match.

The judge, well-known portrait photographer Damien Lovegrove, praised the “pin sharp” image for its narrative, character and sense of natural reality.

Mr Ashton said: “To be honest, having someone say your work is good is worth more to me than the prize.

“I enjoy taking pictures of people doing things, whether it’s Brontë Blues Club and other live music performances, rugby union players or various different athletes and walkers.”
