A BRADFORD Bulls star has started a fundraising mission to help his sister who has been left paralysed after a car crash.

Dave Petersen has set up an online fundraising page for his sister Sammi Petersen, 22, who suffered multiple injuries in the two vehicle accident on the A1035 near Leven, Hull, on Sunday, May 17, this year.

Sammi, who was travelling as a passenger in her partner Paul Hartley's car, suffered a broken hip and pelvis, and a T4 spinal cord injury.

She was airlifted to Hull General Infirmary along with her partner's five-year-old son, who was also injured.

Mr Hartley, who was driving, suffered a fracture to his neck and a broken elbow in the crash.

Sammi, who lives in Hull, faces being in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

She is being treated in the spinal injuries unit at Pinderfields General Hospital, Wakefield, where she is expected to remain for up to the next eight months.

Mr Petersen's online page, called the Sammi Petersen Accident Fund, is looking to reach an initial £6,000 target to help towards funding for an electric wheelchair/trike, adaptations to her house and driving lessons in her new condition.

A new wheelchair will cost £4,500 and her family also need to fit hoists in her home so she will be able to transfer from her wheelchair to her bed.

The Bulls loose forward is looking to hold a sponsored wheelchair ride from Bradford to Hull after the rugby league season has finished later this year.

Other future fundraising events include a long-distance wheelchair ride, leg waxing and race night.

Mr Petersen, 23, said: "Sammi's, and our family's lives, have been turned upside down by the accident.

"She has been unbelievably strong since the accident. I don't understand how she has been doing it. It was an accident, it was no fault of her own.

"I have had to move to Wakefield to be closer to her.

"We are hoping to give her everything possible to keep her smiling. Life is not going to stop for her.

"She is a happy-go-lucky girl, very outgoing and a bit of a party animal.

"We have received a lot of support from the rugby league family and my team-mates as well.

"I will be asking the Bradford Bulls boys to help out with some of the fundraising things I have planned.

"I am now looking for a little help and support. I want to help my sister to still live a life she deserves and want to be able to get her things that would help this."
