A FUNDRAISING drive set-up in memory of a popular Rugby League player has surpassed its latest target.
A JustGiving webpage was started in the days following the death of Keighley Cougars player Danny Jones (pictured) in May.
Initially, it had a target of £1,000, which was quickly left behind and the ambition increased to £100,000 and then £160,000.
The RFL Benevolent Fund, which started the fundraising, currently has a target of £175,000, but the amount donated stands at more than £182,000.
Mr Jones, who was 29, left wife Lizzie Jones and baby twins Phoebe and Bobby.
The money raised will be put into a trust fund for the couple’s children.
The Keighley Cougars is also raising money in memory of the Welsh International and hopes to hit £1 million with events including a charity match against a Welsh team in October.
The club, based at Cougar Park in Royd Ings Avenue, Keighley, is also honouring Mr Jones’s contract, with the payments going directly into the fund.
The stand-off collapsed at the side of the pitch during a League 1 match against London Skolars on Sunday, May 3, and died later that evening.
A post-mortem examination showed the player died from a heart attack, linked to an undiagnosed heart condition.
