A MAN has appeared in court charged with killing a man who died after an incident outside a pub.
Vincent Greaves is accused of the manslaughter of 52-year-old Richard Davies, who died in hospital from serious head injuries.
Greaves, 24, of Silver Cross Way, Guiseley, appeared before Leeds Magistrates Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court on June 19.
Mr Davies was assaulted in the street outside The Aviator, on Yeadon High Street, shortly after a separate altercation in the pub.
The incident took place at about 12.45am on Sunday, and Mr Davies died in Leeds General Infirmary on Thursday.
The local community is in shock after the death and MPs and councillors have expressed their sympathy to Mr Davies' family.
Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland said: "Like everyone else, I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear about the death of a man following an incident in Yeadon last weekend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
"The police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, so if anyone did witness it they should contact the police as soon as possible."
Pudsey MP Stuart Andrew said: "Our thoughts are with the man's family. This must be a devastating time for them. "
He stressed that such incidents are rare.
"It is important to remember that the reason why it is such a shock is because this sort of thing doesn't normally happen," he said.
Otley and Yeadon councillor Colin Campbell expressed his sadness at the death and said his thoughts went to Mr Davies' family.
"Obviously I am very sad to hear when anybody dies," he added."It is unfortunate that it happened locally and I think it doesn't reflect on the character of Yeadon.
"Yeadon is a relatively quiet place and everybody seems to get on very well. I had a couple of people on Sunday expressing concerns about the High Street being closed off and I think it has probably come as a bit of a shock to most people.
"Yeadon is a very safe place to live. People are very friendly and this is unusual."
Detectives are still keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident itself or the circumstances leading up to it.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Detective Constable Andy Smurthwaite, or Detective Sergeant Stephen King, at Elland Road via 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
