VOLUNTEERS from across the BD5 area are gearing up to tackle litter and other environmental problems in the area.

The Beautiful BD5 project, which starts on Monday, is aimed at helping residents focus on being proud of where they live. Initiatives include doing litter picks, supporting street events, a photography and poster competition, and support to help residents clean up their gardens and yards.

Councillor Arshad Hussain (pictured), Bradford Council's executive member for neighbourhoods and community safety, said: "This is a great project to bring communities together and show the community spirit and pride that exists in their local areas."

The project has been organised by the Council's neighbourhoods service. Community groups taking part include Light of the World, the Westend Centre, parents at St Stephen's and Newby Primary Schools, the school council at Dixons City Academy, Parkside Residents' Association, the Youth Forum at the Arc on Canterbury estate, Marshfields Residents' Association, residents of Accent Housing and Manningham Housing Association, and young people who attend West Bowling youth group.
