A CHERRY blossom tree has been planted in the grounds of a Cullingworth school to mark the 30th anniversary of the Bradford City fire disaster.
Two oak trees were originally planted at Parkside School in 1985 to commemorate the deaths of student brothers Felix and Rupert Greenwood in the fire along with their father Peter.
In the intervening years one of the trees, planted by the boys’ mother Hazel and sister Jessica, had died.
Members of Parkside’s Student Leadership Team and staff this month planted the cherry blossom tree, again in memory of Felix and Rupert.
Three poems were read students Archie Wright, Chole Greenwood, Edward Denby, Violet Kaye and Sophie Wood.
Headteacher Andrew Taylor said that planting the tree was symbolic of new beginnings and in a time of such sadness something positive.
He said the school was honoured that Mrs Greenwood was able to attend, and for the relationship with the Greenwood family to continue.
Also at the ceremony was James Turton, who helped to plant the original tree and was a student at Parkside with Felix and Rupert.
Mr Turton said he felt it was important to attend to keep the continuity of remembrance.
