A CARNIVAL which was reborn last year will be even bigger and better this summer and themed on the forthcoming World Cup Rugby tournament, say its organisers.

Baildon Rugby club will be the venue for the community event on Saturday, July 11 and children are encouraged to dress up to represent the different countries taking part in the famous international sporting event.

Backed by Baildon Town Council, there will be live music for the first time, said Councillor Peter Ashton.

"We're really trying to build on the success of last year when the carnival returned to Baildon and we had some 1,500 people visit during the day," Cllr Ashton said.

"For the first time we're having an event stage, which will be on a lorry kindly lent to us by Chris Wright Haulage.

"We've got lots of local bands lined up, plus things like the Baildon ukelele and mandolin groups.

"Another new attraction will be a "cave bus" which is full of tunnels and caves for children to explore and do a bit of pot-holing, plus there will be a small funfair, at least 40 stalls and the Baildon Belles WI will again be running their fabulous tea and cake tent," Cllr Ashton said.

"We still have space for more commercial or charity stalls if people want to get in touch.

"There will be a rugby-themed fancy dress parade and the carnival runs from 2pm to 5pm.

"Another aspect of the weekend is a flag hunt around the town's shops, where children can spot and note down the colours of the different rugby countries."

Cricket fans will also be catered for as there will be a match on the Baildon cricket pitch beside the rugby club on Jenny Lane.

A family ticket only costs £5 and cash raised by the carnival will be used to cover the following year's costs and any remainder will be shared out among bids from local community groups and organisations.

Bradford district Councillor Debbie Davies is also helping organise the carnival and said it promised to be big fun.

"It's a truly local event organised by, and for, Baildon - something that's affordable fun and that every family can walk to if they wish," she said.

"We'd also like to promote advertising in the programme as all funds raised go to local good causes.

"It's a great way to reach families as programmes will go to all the local schools to be distributed to children.
