A DRINK driver who led police on a five-mile high speed chase around Ilkley has been spared an immediate jail sentence.
Danny Green was tracked down by the police helicopter when he fled on foot while more than twice the legal alcohol limit, Bradford Crown Court heard today.
Green, 24, of Wyvil Crescent, Ilkley, pleaded guilty to driving with 97 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, dangerous driving, and driving without insurance, on February 28.
Police on patrol in the centre of Ilkley at 3am spotted Green at the wheel of a Renault Megane, the court heard.
He sped off up Sandholme Drive and Main Street at almost double the 30mph speed limit.
Green jumped red lights and drove across blind junctions during the 11 minute chase.
He then ran off but was caught when the police helicopter was scrambled to find him.
Green's conviction was his second for driving with excess alcohol in the last ten years, the court heard.
He had eight previous convictions for motoring offences and had twice failed to comply with community orders.
The court heard in mitigation that he was the father of a young daughter and had battled alcohol problems.
He had suffered from depression and anxiety and was seeking psychiatric treatment.
He had popped out in the early hours to buy cigarettes.
Judge Paul Camp sentenced Green to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for two years. He was banned from driving for three years and must take an extended test to regain his licence.
He was also ordered to undertake an activity requirement with the probation service.
