A RESTAURANT boss who was attacked in the street remains in a critical condition six months on.

Haq Nawaz Rasool, 38, of Toller Lane, Bradford, was set upon as he locked up his takeaway business in Wakefield on December 13 last year.

He was transferred from Leeds General Infirmary to St Luke's Hospital, Bradford, earlier this month but his condition remains critical.

Doctors had to remove part of his skull to relieve pressure on his brain.

His uncle Mohammed Ramzan said his nephew has not shown any signs of progression over recent weeks and cannot walk unaided.

Mr Ramzan said: "He is like a vegetable. He still can't do anything for himself.

"He has not progressed. He can't get out of bed for himself. He needs 24-hour care. He needs help just wiping his face. He needs his food mashed up for him. It's not nice to see him like that.

"He can't talk that much. He can't talk in sentences.

"He can't open his eyes but he can only see one per cent in his one eye. He can't walk unless he is helped.

"All of the family want to see him progress, but he's not changing.

"He can only see a shadow out of the corner of his eye.

"It has put a lot of strain on us."

Mr Ramzan said he is still battling a Home Office decision to refuse an application for three months' access to the UK for Mr Rasool's wife of two years, Rizwana Siddique, who is in Pakistan.

This was despite Mr Ramzan offering a £40,000 surety.

He said Mr Rasool's family was now contemplating a second application, possibly using a spouse application for Miss Siddique.

Mr Ramzan said: "It's difficult. He needs his wife to look after him now. He needs to be able to call her over.

"It's been a horrible six months.

"His wife does not know what to do. What can she do?

"We are still fighting. Has she not got a right to come?"

Miss Siddique's case was supported by former Bradford West MP George Galloway earlier this year.

The constituency's newly-elected MP Labour's Naz Shah is set to meet Mr Rasool's family in the next two weeks to discuss the case further.

A spokesman for Ms Shah said: "She will be meeting the family in the next couple of weeks. It is a tragic case.

"We will look to resolve it as best we can."

* A 20-year-old man has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm on Mr Rasool and is due to stand trial at Leeds Crown Court later this year.

Three other men were arrested in connection with the incident and their files are still being considered by the Crown Prosecution Service.
