A SHIPLEY firm has made a disabled man's dream come true by taking him to meet his favourite Formula 1 motor racing team and helping him customise his mobility scooter in its colours.
Joiner Sam Duncan suffered a 60ft fall and broke his back in 1992 and when the keen car fan wanted special mud flaps for his 8mph You-Q Alex scooter in preparation for a sponsored ride he rang specialist plastics firm Kay-Dee Engineering Ltd of Shipley.
"I told them it was for my scooter and then sent them photos of it.
"It's decorated in the style of a Force India F1 car and Kay-Dee said they actually supplied products to that team and could help," said Falklands veteran Mr Duncan, 53, who lives in Diss, Norfolk.
"Then they asked, would I mind if they told Force India about my scooter," he said.
The next thing was that Kay-Dee's technical sales administrator Justin Herd rang Mr Duncan to say Force India had invited him to visit its base at Silverstone.
"Justin called me at 6.45pm to say he was picking me up first thing the next morning," Mr Duncan said.
"He arrived and put me and the scooter in the van and took me to Silverstone.
"It was a dream come true. I got to see all the Force India factory and it was wonderful.
"I'd like to thanks Justin and Kay-Dee from the bottom of my heart - not a lot of companies would do something like that."
Mr Herd said everyone had been both moved and impressed by Mr Duncan's story.
"He's a really great bloke and is making a sponsored trip to Silverstone on his scooter to arrive on the day of British Grand Prix this July," Mr Herd said.
"Force India was brilliant and we spent two or three hours there and Sam saw how our products were used on the cars.
"They have also promised him new stickers and logos."
Mr Duncan wanted the special mud flaps for his scooter in preparation for his sponsored scooter ride to Silverstone, which is in aid of amputee servicemen and women.
