A POLICE sergeant and woman were taken to hospital after a car collided with a police vehicle responding to an emergency call in Bradford.

A police Vauxhall Corsa, which suffered bad damage to its front end, and a black Volkswagen Golf, which had its driver's side damaged, crashed on Durham Road, Girlington.

The 20-year-old passenger in the Golf was treated for facial injuries, while the officer driving the police car suffered from back pain.

Police said the 27-year-old woman driving the Golf was not injured.

Resident Jimmy Khan said he spotted the police car being driven at speed on Durham Road before the accident. He estimated it was travelling at about 40mph, in a 20mph zone.

"I saw there was a police car driving really fast," said Mr Khan.

"I think they were coming for someone in Durham Road."

He said there was a large thud as the vehicles hit each other.

Mr Khan said the police car had its blue lights flashing at the time of the accident.

"It was doing at least 40mph," he said.

"There was a problem on Durham Road with a drunken guy. He was drunk and he had started fighting."

The 32-year-old, who took pictures following the accident, added: "This could have been a lot worse the way they were driving the car. I am quite shocked - it was scary. Anyone could have been in the road."

A police spokesman said the officer was responding to a concern for safety call and that enquiries into the collision, which happened at around 8.15pm on Sunday, were on-going.

He added: "The driver of the police car was a male officer. He went to Airedale General Hospital with back pains, for a check-up."
