A CLECKHEATON woman has died after a hit and run incident in Bradford in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police are appealing for information after the 28-year-old was struck by a car while crossing the A58 Whitehall Road in Wyke.

She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with injuries described at the time as "life-threatening", and died yesterday afternoon.

A 43 year-old man from Dewsbury was arrested on suspicion of careless driving and was remanded in custody.

He was released on bail this morning while enquiries into the incident continue.

Police Constable Martin Ward, from West Yorkshire Police's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "The incident occurred around 2.30am when a Toyota Corolla, which was travelling in the direction of Halifax, struck the pedestrian as she crossed the road close to the junction with Westfield Lane.

"The driver of the vehicle then left the scene.

"The pedestrian, who is from the Cleckheaton area, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with life threatening injuries.

"I am appealing to any witnesses or anyone with information in relation to this incident to come forward and speak to officers."

A 43-year-old man from Dewsbury later reported the incident at Dewsbury Police Station and was arrested.
