SCHOOLS across Bradford will be taking part in a hair-raising sponsored event to raise money for poorly children.

Wig Wednesday will involve children and staff in schools and nurseries donning fake hair to raise money for Clic Sargent, which supports young people with cancer.

Schools, community groups and businesses can still sign up for the event which takes place next Wednesday.

Among the schools taking part in Yorkshire are the Kinder Haven nurseries.

Nikol Rainbank, manager at Kinder Haven in Sticker Lane, Bradford, said: “A parent approached us and asked how we would feel about raising awareness and funds to support CLIC Sargent. After researching the charity and approaching employees and parents they were highly supportive of the cause.

"As many of us are parents ourselves we understand the importance of recognising and supporting such charities as one day, any one of us could be affected and believe there is not enough recognition for children’s cancer charities. We have already raised £205 with the help and support of parents, employees, local businesses and Lowerfields Primary school, by baking cupcakes and holding a takeaway evening, and we hope to raise a lot more with the help and support of others.”

Stephen Jackett, CLIC Sargent fundraising manager for Yorkshire, said: “We can’t wait to see the colourful display of wigs at Kinder Haven Day Nurseries. Given the cutbacks and strains on NHS services, charity fundraising is playing an ever more vital role in front line services and Wig Wednesday is a fantastic means to raise those funds."
