AN EYESORE vehicle that motorists say has blighted a Bradford city centre car park for at least two years - racking up more than £5,000 in parking charges - is finally to be removed.

The filthy blue Volkswagen Polo, which has flat tyres and smashed windows, has been parked on level five of the Hall Ings NCP since mid-2013, it is believed.

Now, Bradford Council has stuck a notice on the car, giving its owner seven days' notice to come forward and save it from destruction.

If no-one accepts responsibility, another notice will be served stating that the car will be removed and destroyed by May 27.

NCP manager James Graham said his staff were made aware of the abandoned car at the start of December.

Using that date, the cost for parking, if the car was picked up by its owner on May 27, would be £1,690 - based on the £9 a day charge up until February, and the £10 a day it rose to from March 1.

However, regular users of the car park say the Polo has been there for at least two years - racking up a further £5,211 in day-to-day parking charges between May 2013 and the end of November.

Mr Graham, who said the car was reported to Bradford Council on January 6 this year, said: "It is a frustration that it takes up a space we could give to our customers and it is not something we want our customers to be seeing.

"Little things like this detract from all the good work we do."

A Council spokesman said: "A member of staff from the NCP Hall Ings reported the vehicle to us as abandoned after it had been there for at least a year.

"We have put a notice on the car and will check with DVLA to see if the car has a registered keeper.

"If there is a registered keeper we will write to them and give them seven days to respond. If we receive no response we will send a destruction notice, inform West Yorkshire Police, and NCP staff can arrange for the vehicle to be removed and stored for a minimum of seven days before disposal.

"This is the standard procedure that we follow for abandoned vehicles."

He added: "If a vehicle is causing a health and safety problem or is an obstruction, we will remove to storage immediately and then attempt to contact the owner."
