A BAND based in the Bradford district are raising funds and awareness for a mental health charity with their new single.

Al Leeming, 31, and John Hamilton, 43, have released a cover of Jackson Browne's 1977 hit Running on Empty with all proceeds going to mental health charity Mind.

The duo formed Jackson and the Phoenix Machine earlier this year and released the charity single yesterday to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week.

They have also produced a music video to accompany the charity single which was filmed on a busy morning at Leeds and Crossflatts train stations.

The single comes from their debut album called Putting Out Fires, which features a mixture of originals and covers.

Lead singer Mr Leeming, of Oakworth, near Keighley, said: "We chose to raise money for Mind as I feel mental health issues are vastly overlooked in general.

"Mental health issues affect so many people, probably many people that you know but it's not always easy to get help or understanding.

"It’s slowly becoming less of a stigma and there are some truly wonderful people out there who devote their time and effort to help so many.

"It's a subject very close to my heart and I'm very happy to be able to do something positive for the cause.

"I have had some pretty severe family issues with mental health over the last couple of years.

"There is a history of mental health issues in my family. It's been quite trying at times.

"I want people to know that there is support out there but it is not always widely known that there is support out there. There is a really good support network.

"Anything we can do to bring that to light is good.

"I have certainly used Mind in the past and I'm happy to help them where I can.

"Mental health is an issue that is far more widely recognised these days. It's always been there though."

The band's album was produced and recorded at drummer Mr Hamilton's home in Bingley. He also works as head of safety, health and wellbeing at Leeds Beckett University.

He said: "The single is just to raise awareness.

"Wellbeing to me is about keeping healthy and happy, it’s about the life choices we make on a daily basis, all of which add up to how good we feel both physically and mentally.

"It can be simple things such as diet or sleep, or more complex issues such as our relationships with loved ones or our jobs and career.

"I would be happy if we could raise even a few quid for such a good cause."
