FIRE CREWS from Keighley and Silsden tackled a blaze at a house in Silsden just after lunchtime today.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went into the detached house at Ings Way to check whether anyone was inside.
They called paramedics, police and an extra fire engine from Skipton in case it turned out someone was at home.
But the house had been empty when the fire started in the kitchen at around 12.45pm.
Crew commander Mike Barnes, from Keighley Fire Station, said: “On arrival we saw a serious amount of black smoke coming from the upstairs windows, and there were smoke-blackened windows as well.
“We forced entry through the front door. We extinguished the fire in the kitchen and searched the building.
“The kitchen was severely damaged by fire, and the rest of the house was badly smoke damaged.”
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
