MEMBERS of Bradford’s Latvian community will perform in Centenary Square this weekend.
The city’s Latvian Cultural Festival revives the tradition of song festivals which Bradford’s Latvian community has been involved in over the years.
The first Latvians arrived in the city in 1947, from refugee camps in Germany. The Latvian Club, at Clifton Villas off Manningham Lane, opened in the early 1950s.
and a dance group, Sakta, a choir, a theatre company and a Latvian weekend school was formed.
In 2002 a new wave of Latvian people arrived in Bradford, helping to re-energise the community. It now has a flourishing dance group, called Kamolins, and a Latvian school attended by more than 30 children.
The Latvian community presents the song festival in Bradford on Sunday.
