RESIDENTS are demanding street CCTV cameras as a last resort to drive anti-social behaviour away from their homes.

People living in Fagley Terrace say they are being plagued by fly-tippers, arsonists, speeding cars and drug-dealers, who are making their lives a misery.

Dumped rubbish, from mattresses to rubble, appears on a daily basis, adding to the doorstep mess by some tenants renting properties there.

On two recent occasions, the fire service has had to tackle blazes after heaps of waste have been deliberately set alight dangerously close to houses, says resident Tony Boaxall, who has lived on the Terrace for 25 years.

"The back of our houses is an unadopted road so we don't have any luck getting the council to help us clear that, they say it's our responsibility. The council has tried to install some kind of social responsibility among some of the residents but a lot of them are transient and only stay a short time and move on - leaving the mess behind - so that's a dead end."

And he added: "The flytippers come on the back of that because it's already in a state and then we have the other problem of drug-dealing, brazenly during the day - most of the day long. Cars pull up, there are quick handshakes, the drugs are handed over and that's it until the next lot come along."

Mr Boaxall said there are four exit routes from the street, which makes it a popular haunt for anti-social yobs.

He said: "It's made easy for them to escape if the police come, it's convenient, they just melt into the gloom until the all clear.

"No one seems to have any answers or concrete plan so we're left with the idea of street cctv as a deterrent and as a way of getting evidence that can be acted on. No doubt the council will keep saying it would be too expensive to run and monitor but we need help."

Bradford Moor Cllr Faisal Khan said he believed action was about to be taken to help residents.

"We had a big meeting two weeks ago about these problems and a few action points came out of it. A mobile street camera might have been one of them. I will check and get an update on it."

Inspector George Bardell, who leads the Bradford East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: ‘‘We are aware of anti-social behaviour issues around Fagley Terrace and it is one of our key priorities.

‘‘As well as increasing the neighbourhood policing presence in the area we are also utilising the specialist skills of the Bradford District Off-Road Bike Team and the Anti-Social Behaviour team to identify and target those involved. To ensure the issue is tackled and long term solutions are put in place to prevent any further problems we are coordinating our work with local housing providers and Bradford Council. ’’

A Bradford Council spokesman said it would be speaking to residents and added: "We are working with the Police to tackle anti-social behaviour and any drug related activity and identifying those involved. We will be speaking with local residents to gather more information. Anyone with any information about anti social behaviour can contact 101 or 01274 373968 or bradford.ntshub@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk."

Anyone with any information about fly-tippers can call the Council's Environmental Enforcement team on 01274 434366, or email eh.admin@bradford.gov.uk. "
