VOLUNTEERS from the National Grid gave Bradford youngsters a helping hand with their first steps into the world of work before mucking in down on the farm.

Staff from the energy company helped teenagers at the city’s PRISM Youth Project hone their interview techniques and create CVs and complete job applications, in a bid to land their dream jobs and coveted college places.

In return, PRISM trainees – youngsters aged 12-21 who receive support in accessing mainstream educational, employment and training opportunities – showed the National Grid volunteers the ropes at the project’s City Farm, based in Walker Drive, Girlington. They helped with gardening work, and feeding and mucking out the animals.

The skills-based session at PRISM was one of 17 nationwide events organised by National Grid as part of Responsible Business Week.

Volunteer co-ordinator at PRISM Paul Kilgallon said: “The skills training that National Grid provided is invaluable – and really helps a young person in need.

"It’ll help bridge the gap between where they are now and the world of work, and help them think more widely about their future.”
