GREG Mulholland, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Leeds North West, says his party will give a £10m boost for servicemen and women suffering from mental health problems.
This would more than double the money currently available to help veterans overcome problems such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The investment would also help provide a series of measures including assistance to get people back into work.
During the last parliament, Mr Mulholland worked to highlight the challenges faced by veterans.
Last May he was part of an expedition to Ecuador, to climb the 19,347ft Mount Cotopaxi, led by Carnegie Great Outdoors based at Leeds Beckett University.
The group comprised a cross-party team of MPs as well as current and former soldiers, all of whom worked to raise £8,500 for the Royal British Legion’s Battle Back Centre., an adaptive sport and adventurous training facility for wounded, injured and sick Armed Forces personnel.
The expedition had a particular focus on highlighting the mental health challenges faced by current and former service personnel.
Mr Mulholland said:“We ask our armed forces to put their lives on the line for our country. Therefore, it is only right that as a country we support them for life, whether they remain in the armed services or after they leave.”
