AN ARTIST is to hold a photographic exhibition at Bradford Brewery to raise awareness of the effects of Huntington’s Disease.
"Perseverance" by Roz Doherty, a HNC photography student at Bradford College, explores some of the obsessive traits of people affected by the condition, which damages nerve cells in the brain, by recreating those "obsessions" in the form of photographic still-life.
The conceptIt was inspired by her close friend, Nicky Smith, who has the disease and has been working with Mrs Doherty to create an understanding of its impact on people’s daily lives.
The four-week long exhibition will be unveiled in the brewery’s Brewfactory pub, off Westgate, from 7.30pm tomorrow, with Mrs Doherty and Miss Smith in attendance to talk about what inspired the 15 photographs.
Mrs Doherty, 32, of Lockwood Street, Saltaire, said: “The more obvious approach would have been to take portraits of people living with Huntington’s, but I wanted to produce images that engage people directly with the works and, hopefully, make them think more deeply about how these behaviours affect the lives of people with Huntington’s.”
The event will also feature live music, and a chance to donate to the West Yorkshire Branch of the Huntington’s Disease Association.
